Magazine Analysis

Analysis of magazine - Version 1 (First draft)

Title
The name of the magazine is in a clear 'Century Gothic Bold' font allowing it to be clearly visible to catch passer by's eyes. The title is a specific typeface which should be kept constant throughout different copy's and issues of a magazine as it allows a recognisable brand to be formed to it's audience. The colour of the font is a baby blue which has positive connotations, for instance,  peace, strength and tranquility. The title is positioned directly above all other contents on the cover as this is consistent throughout all magazine covers.

Dateline
The dateline (month and year of publication) and  issue number are all located together in top of the right third of the cover. This information is in a 'Century Gothic Bold', however strategically in a size 10 font due the unimportance in this information in the context of selling purposes.

Barcode
Standard bar code used by retailers, displayed on UK magazines since 1988. This is positioned in the bottom of the lower left third due to it not being a selling point of the magazine it is not necessary for it to be bigger or highly visible.

Cover lines
The four cover lines, are all located in the left third. They vary in colour and size, drawing in attention and potential buyers. The cover lines must appeal and make the articles appear as interesting as possible. The left third of the magazine cover is vital for sales in shops as the magazine is not shown full frontage . Therefore the cover lines must be effective. The cover lines are purposely in the specific colours pink and green. As green suggests nature and health relating to the theme of the magazine (animals). Similarly pink suggests passiveness and friendliness.

Analysis of changes made to magazine cover - Version 2 (Second draft)

Firstly, I changed the font of the "pet care - special edition" from yellow to black as this made it prominent on the page and stand out more. As the fact this issue is a special edition is a main selling point  it was vital this was clearly visible.

I also added the price of the magazine to the cover, this was however in a significantly smaller size (font size - 10) as it's important the customer decides to buy the magazine before they actually notice the price.

I added one more cover line in the left third. Due to fact that cover lines are the buyers first insight to what the magazine contains it's important to include many cover lines as it suggests the magazine contains lots of information and detail.

Furthermore, the colour of all cover lines where changed to pink. As well as the colour of the pink circle, it was important to maintain a branding colour scheme, I did this my maintaing pink as the colour of all cover lines.

I addition, I also added a main cover line which is the main article or feature within the magazine.  This is very large - taking up almost a quarter of the magazine cover. The us of the colour red allows the buzzword "deadly' to be more visible within the page.

In conclusion, my final layout links to my research on magazine covers due to the inclusion of all magazine cover components I researched. For example barcode, cover lines and the use of thirds. I believe my use of colours will be useful in encouraging purchases as the pinks, reds and blues are bold, dominating colours which will catch peoples eyes. Overall, in this magazine cover producing task I have successfully learnt how to use Desk top Publishing in a effective way in order to produce well thought out content.

Preliminary Task Video

Interview Script Idea-

Interviewer: Hey, how are you today?

Interviewer: Yeah, good thanks, yourself?

Interviewer: Great thanks, so please tell me, what exactly happened on the night your neighbour’s house caught fire?

Interviewee: Well it all happened so quickly, I went in to the garden and saw smoke rising from my neighbour’s window, in a panic I rushed to their house.

Interviewer: Weren’t you afraid?

Interviewee: There was no time to be scared; I knew there could be young children in that house.

Interviewer: That’s incredibly brave! Then what happened?

Interviewee: I put my jumper round my mouth, trying not to breathe in too much smoke; I kicked down the front door and rushed in.

Interviewer: That’s amazing! Did you see anyone inside?

Interviewee: Not straight away, but once I reached upstairs, I picked up a young crying child from the top of the landing and ran down to outside the house, I passed lots of flames and heavy thick smoke.

Interviewer: What happened once you were outside?

Interviewee: The child was unharmed, luckily, so I returned the child to their mother and waited the fire engine.

Interviewer: This is an absolutely amazing story, you must be so proud! Thank you for sharing.

Interviewee: No problem, thanks.

Video auxillary equipment

Track and dolly

camera dolly is a wheeled cart or similar device used in filmmaking and television production to create smooth horizontal camera movements. An advantage of using this over a handheld camera is that you get a smoother shot. However, a disadvantage would be that it may retract your movements as its bolted to the track only.

Stead-icam

The steadi-cam is a camera stabiliser mount for motion pictures cameras that mechanically isolates it from the operator's movement. It allows for a smooth shot, even when moving quickly over an uneven surface. An advantage of using this instead of a handheld is that allows your shots to be smoother and therefrom more professional. However, a disadvantage is that some shots need to look shaky, for instance, a POV shot of someone running,

Tripod

In camera work, tripod is a portable three-legged frame, used as a platform for supporting the weight and maintaining the stability of a camera shot. An advantage of using a tripod is that it allows you to fully focus on creating the perfect shot and not on holding the camera. However, a disadvantage is that it may restrict your movements, as to move the camera, the whole tripod needs to be moved.

H1N

H1N is a portable, digital voice recorder. This is used to gather sound recording in a portable device. An advantage over using a the in camera sound recorder is that it means your sound is recorder separate and possibly clearer sounding audio. A disadvantage over using the in camera sound recorder is that its more equipment you need.

Shotgun Microphone

A shotgun microphone is connected directly to the camera. A advantage of using this over the in camera microphone is that its will allow your audio to be more professional as it will be clearer. However, a disadvantage of using a shotgun microphone over the in camera microphone is that its more equipment you need.

Camera composition

Camera Composition

The clip ill be analysing is front the movie 'Inside Man'. This scene includes several head shots, this encourages the audience to focus on what the actors are saying, resulting in a more intimate viewing as the audience fully understand the characters thoughts and feelings.

This shot is a birds eye view. This shot is used as it allows the audience to see the scene from a different point of view, allowing them to have knowledge of the whole setting not just from one basic angle.

This is a two shot as two people are shown in the same shot. This is a useful shot as it allows the audience to see the facial expressions of two people at once. Consequently increasing the audiences understanding of the characters roles.

What is a script?
In screenplay, a script is the dialog and language for a film or play.

Why do film makers invariably use a variety of camera shots?
Generally, different camera shots are used in film as it allows the audience to see different perspectives of the scene, this is useful as it increases the understanding of the scenario at hand.

Different shots include:

  • An establishing shot
  • Wide angle shot
  • Head shot
  • Birds eye view
  • Over the shoulder shot
  • Two shot
  • Low angle shot
  • High angle shot
  • Long shot
  • Closeup
  • Medium shot
  • Extreme closeup
  • Mid shot
  • Medium close up
  • Dutch angle
  • High angle
  • Pan
  • Cut in
  • Over the head
  • Tilt
  • Dolly zoom (with tripod)
  • Medium two shot

The antagonist is the character who is seen as the villain within a story.
The protagonist is the character who is seen as the hero within a story.

A close up shot is used as it allows the audience to see the emotion of the characters through the facial expressions. giving the audience a full understanding if the characters thoughts and feelings within that scene. If the character is feeling sadness and despair this will be evident though their eyes, a close up shot allows this to be evident.

Film makers use a long shot as it allows more to be seen at once, this is useful as it increasing the knowledge for the audience of what is exactly in that scene.
